5-Year Goal II:

By 2013, LAUSD will reduce risk behaviors associated with HIV infection among school-aged youth through family and community access to the District’s HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives.

Objective 5:

By February 28, 2011, LAUSD will develop a plan to increase youth involvement in the District’s HIV/AIDS prevention-education program that focuses on priority populations.

Rationale for the objective:

The youth involvement increases the resilience in the participants, supports cultural competence in the delivery of services by peers, and incorporates an additional mode of learning through youth-initiated activities and presentations. In LAUSD, the 2007 California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) showed that through their schools, our 34% of our students in Grade 7, 25% in Grade 9, and 32% in Grade 11 were able to do projects that help their school or community. Profiles 2008 indicates that over 50% of our school health councils have a student representative on council. Profiles 2008 found that 56% of our secondary schools have some form of a Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) club on campus.

Activities in support of the objective:

  1. Incorporate youth leadership into HIV/AIDS prevention-education programs, by incorporating an appropriate ethnic representation that is relevant to District demographics and/or fall into a high risk category like the LGBTQ population.
  2. Recruit and sustain student involvement in committee work and membership on HIV Program Review Panel.
  3. Develop student toolkit on HIV/AIDS and related topics that also accesses resources on student populations represented in District like African American, Latino, and LGBTQ youth.
  4. Distribute student toolkit in print or electronically with resources for peer-to-peer education. e. Provide school staff support guidelines and resources that students can access for questions and assistance.
