5-Year Goal II: By 2013, LAUSD will reduce risk behaviors associated with HIV infection among school-aged youth through family and community access to the District’s HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives.

Objective 4: By February 28, 2011, the LAUSD will develop a plan to increase parent involvement in a HIV/AIDS prevention-education.

Rationale for the objective: Parental understanding and support for HIV prevention education is vital to the effectiveness of the program for youth, as provided by District health teachers. In LAUSD, The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) 2007 showed that in Grade 7 42%, in Grade 9 36%, and in Grade 11 30% of students discussed sex with parents or other adults in the family in the past six months. Profiles 2008 show that 57% of our schools have school health councils and 62% have parents on the councils.

Activities in support of the objective:

  1. Assess current parent involvement in HIV/AIDS prevention-education programs from targeted hot spots that have evidence from LA County Department of Public Health data of highest risk, such as south central parts of the District, primarily populated by African American and Latino youth.
  2. Provide opportunities for parent involvement in committee work, policy review, and membership on HIV Program Review Panel.
  3. Add more parent resources on web page on new Web site. Specifically promote research on populations that are relevant to District demographics, like women and men of color.
  4. Organize and distribute a parent toolkit related to HIV prevention-education, that targets high risk populations, like the LGBTQ youth.
  5. Partner with Local District Parent Collaborative to deliver parent information sessions on HIV/AIDS prevention-education and provide follow up resources and/or technical assistance.
