5-Year Goal II:
By 2013, LAUSD will reduce risk behaviors associated with HIV infection among school-aged youth through family and community access to the District’s HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives.
Objective 6:
By February 28, 2011, the LAUSD will develop a plan to increase community involvement in a HIV/AIDS prevention-education program.
Rationale for the objective:
Community understanding and support for HIV prevention-education is vital to the effectiveness of the program for youth, as provided by District health teachers. The Los Angeles County Department of Health (STD Control) has provided data on STD infections and pregnancy rates by zip code to determine high rates of infection within campus locations, thus providing a roadmap to pinpoint where targeted efforts need to be made. County data shows Los Angeles having the highest rate of Chlamydia and Syphilis in California. Los Angeles is second for Gonorrhea in California. A pilot STD program is in process at our campus with highest STD infection rate (452 cases of Chlamydia) and will be used as model for other schools.
Activities in support of the objective:
- Conduct Program Review Panel Meetings at least quarterly to explore and discuss strategies and activities used in the field of HIV prevention education for the general student population and high risk populations, like youth of color.
- Conduct Program Review Panel meetings to propose activities to increase community involvement with priority populations, like LGBTQ youth.
- Disseminate information on on-going awareness and recognition days for HIV/AIDS and related topics, and other relevant resources.
- Add additional resources and links will be placed on community web page and linked to CDC Web site for HIV testing resources.
5-Year Goal III:
By 2013, LAUSD will reduce risk behaviors associated with HIV infection among school-aged youth by integrating the District’s HIV/AIDS prevention-education programs with other local and state prevention initiatives.
Objective 7:
By February 28, 2011, the LAUSD will strengthen and sustain partnerships with key stakeholders to promote HIV prevention-education and awareness.
Rationale for the objective:
As a major provider of HIV/AIDS prevention services, LAUSD must be part of the leadership network advancing the field of HIV/AIDS prevention through the development and implementation of effective policies and education strategies. In 2008, Project Connect reported that almost 20% of the surveyed middle school students are having sexual intercourse by Grade 8, 16% reported having oral sex by Grade 6. The YRBS 2009 found that 38.3% of our high school students had engaged in sexual intercourse.
Activities in support of the objective:
- Participate in HIV Learning Collaborative with other DASH partners funded for HIV in California, such as LGBTQ Joint Work Group.
- Attend a minimum of two CDC-sponsored conferences, related conferences, and workshops.
- Attend trainings on implementation of state monitoring system for HIV/AIDS instruction.
- Attend meetings of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and Office of AIDS Program and Policy, HIV Planning Prevention Committee.
- Collaborate with the state and local task forces such as California Department of Education committees regarding Health Standards, Connect to Protect, the Wall Las Memorias, and LA County Department of Public Health (STD Control Branch).
- Collaborate with local and state agencies that focus on meeting the needs of LGBTQ youth, in particular African and Latino youth.
- Work with the National and State organizations, like the American Cancer Society, National School Board Association, American School Health Association, and like organizations to improve HIV/AIDS education efforts and comprehensive health education.
- Prepare report and provide key findings from School Health Profiles and YRBS to partners. Project staff will be available for technical assistance where needed.
